Detroit got a second bridge to Canada, and almost nobody noticed

The first new road crossing to Windsor since 1929 opened this year. It is publicly owned, it was paid for by another country, and it arrived a year late to very little fanfare.

Why this is called Detroit Hub

A hub because that is literally how Detroit is built. After the fire of 1805 Augustus Woodward laid the city out as avenues radiating from a point rather than a grid, and Woodward, Michigan, Grand River, Gratiot and Fort still run at those angles today. Everything meets in the middle.

Every other American city of its size was laid out on a grid. Detroit was not, and you can still feel it at every downtown junction that refuses to meet at ninety degrees.

Detroit's radial avenuesFive avenues fan out from Campus Martius near the river: Woodward due north, Gratiot north-east, Grand River north-west, Michigan west and Fort south-west. Jefferson runs along the riverfront.Detroit RiverJeffersonWoodwardGratiotGrand RiverMichiganFortCampus Martius
