A captain who asked to leave, and no general manager
- Dylan Larkin asked to be traded; the request became public in early June. Five years remain on an eight-year, $69.9 million deal at $8.7 million against the cap.
- Detroit has spoken with Florida, Minnesota, Vegas and Dallas. No offer has been judged good enough.
- Steve Yzerman stepped down as general manager on 15 July and stayed on as a senior adviser. The club hired a search firm; as of late August no successor had been named, with assistant general manager Shawn Horcoff running the department day to day.
- The playoff drought stands at ten seasons, the longest in the club's history.
